What Griffin in Summer Is About
Nicholas Colia's 2025 American film follows Griffin, who at fourteen believes he is a playwright. Across the summer he tries to make his friends perform a heavy family drama he has written; when the twenty-five-year-old handyman his mother hires appears, both the play and his life change direction. The humour comes from the boy taking himself too seriously, and it never belittles him. The difference between Griffin's hurry to be an adult and the disarray of actual adults is well built. Everett Blunck's performance carries it. Melanie Lynskey's mother has several of the film's best scenes. The story stays close to its template. Who it's for: viewers who like American independent comedy and stories of adolescence. Who it's not for: anyone wanting surprises, or made uncomfortable by comedy of embarrassment.
