Three Months

Caleb lives in South Florida and his graduation is days away. He takes photographs, smokes, and spends time with his grandmother. One day something happens where he works and he has to be tested. The result is inconclusive: for a definite answer he must wait three months. Through those three months his life goes on but there is a waiting over everything. He goes to a support group. He meets Estha there. Something starts between them and Caleb says he does not want it. Graduation approaches and the result still has not come. Jared Frieder writes and directs. Troye Sivan plays Caleb and Viveik Kalra plays Estha; Brianne Tju, Ellen Burstyn and Judy Greer are in the cast. It is an American production. The film went out on Paramount+ on 23 February 2022. Troye Sivan is known as a musician and has the lead here. The matter it treats is the waiting period; the film is not about the illness but about three months spent in uncertainty. The narrative does not turn the subject into tragedy; the humour is constant and the characters joke. The grandmother Ellen Burstyn plays is its emotional centre. The film takes on HIV with today's medical facts and does not use the narrative shape of the eighties. The narrative shows the family's reaction too and that section is not resolved easily. Its limit is scale; the narrative is small, there is little event, and the ending familiar. Who it is for: viewers who like youth drama and romantic comedy. Who it is not for: it is small in scale, the pace low, and the ending where expected.
