What Boule de Suif Is About
Mikhail Romm’s first film, made in 1934, is also the last silent film of Soviet cinema, and it adapts Guy de Maupassant’s story. During the Franco-Prussian war of 1870 a coach leaves Rouen, then under Prussian occupation, carrying a group of respectable bourgeois and one prostitute. Stopped along the way, they find there is exactly one route out: persuading her to submit to a Prussian officer. As in the story, the officer is not the subject. The subject is the travelling companions, who push her into it without doubting their own morality for a second and go back to despising her the moment it is done. Galina Sergeyeva plays her, and Faina Ranevskaya is in the cast.
