Robin Campillo has called himself an ACT UP militant in the 1990s, and Philippe Mangeot, who co-wrote the script, was in the same organisation. It was shot in Paris and partly in Orléans, in the closed La Source hospital. In February 2018 a screening at the Romanian Peasant Museum in Bucharest was interrupted by protesters singing church chants, and police removed them after half an hour. Cannes gave the film four prizes in 2017: the Grand Prix, the FIPRESCI Prize, the François Chalais Prize and the Queer Palm. The bigger haul came at home. At the 43rd César Awards on 2 March 2018 it had 13 nominations, among the most of the night, and won 6: Best Film, Best Original Screenplay, Best Editing, Best Supporting Actor for Antoine Reinartz, Most Promising Actor for Nahuel Pérez Biscayart and Best Original Music for Arnaud Rebotini. Best Director stayed a nomination. In the same season Campillo took Best Editor at the 30th European Film Awards, so the cutting won twice, and the editor who took the prizes was the director himself. A good fit if you want the argument in the meeting hall to take as much room as the actions outside. Not for a viewer who cannot take illness and end-of-life care in detail; the film gives its closing stretch to that.
