What Brainwashed Is About
Werner von Basil, an Austrian intellectual, is taken by the Nazis in 1938. What his interrogators want is a confession of smuggling, and to break him they keep him alone in a room with nothing to occupy him. The only thing left to him is an old chess book; for months he keeps his mind busy with it and plays the games out in his head. But chess a man plays against himself stops, after a while, holding the mind together and turns into something else. The film was adapted from a novel. Curd Jurgens and Claire Bloom appear in Gerd Oswald’s hundred and two minute German film, completed in 1960.
