Brave the Dark

Damian Harris's 2025 American film tells the story of Stan Deen, a drama teacher who bails a high school student out of jail after discovering he has been living in his car. It is adapted from a real case; Deen taught for many years in Pennsylvania, and the film draws on the account of the student he helped. Jared Harris carries the saving-teacher template without turning it into emotional blackmail; the young man played by Nicholas Hamilton is a figure who refuses to remember the trauma of his childhood. The film's limit is formal: the story climbs the familiar steps of its genre in order and springs no surprises. Against that, it is honest in discussing the limits of a caring relationship. Who it's for: viewers who like dramas adapted from real events and teacher and student stories. Who it's not for: anyone wanting a story outside the template, or avoiding content about childhood trauma and suicide.
