What Bright Leaf Is About
In North Carolina after the Civil War, an old feud between two tobacco men turns into a fight for the market as cigarette manufacture becomes mechanised. Brant Royle prepares to flood the trade with his own brand while two women wait to see which way he will go, one of them his rival’s daughter. Michael Curtiz made it from Foster Fitz-Simons’s 1948 novel, and the title refers to the kind of tobacco grown in the region. Gary Cooper, Lauren Bacall and Patricia Neal take the leads, with Karl Freund on camera and a score by Victor Young. It came out in 1950 and stayed a largely forgotten Curtiz picture for decades.
