What The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant Is About
A celebrated fashion designer becomes obsessively attached to a young woman she meets and the relationship turns quickly into a contest of power. Rainer Werner Fassbinder shoots it in a single flat almost as theatre: the camera moves and nobody leaves, and the enclosure is stifling. The servant standing silently in the room is the most important character, making the whole hierarchy visible without a word. The costumes and wigs are deliberately excessive. It is among the plainest accounts of how emotional violence operates.
