What Lola Is About
West Germany, 1957, in the years of the economic miracle. Lola sings in a nightclub and the town's leading men are her customers, but what she wants is money, property and a respectable life. She sets about building her position by playing the newly arrived, incorruptible building commissioner against the crooked contractor who runs the town. Fassbinder made it as an open reference to The Blue Angel; the colours are bright as sweets and the subject is an order in which nothing is not for sale. Part of his postwar German trilogy, but it stands alone.
