What Brothers Is About
Josef and Ctirad Mašín are the sons of an officer who resisted the Nazi occupation and was executed for it, and they take following their father’s path as a duty. Between 1951 and 1953 they form an armed resistance group against the communist government in Czechoslovakia; they then set out on a flight across East Germany to reach West Berlin and join the American army, with thousands of soldiers after them. Because of the people who died during the group’s actions, the legacy of these two men is still argued over in Czechia today, and the film does not close it as a tale of heroism. Tomáš Mašín’s hundred and thirty five minute Czech film was adapted from a book by Barbara Mašín. It was completed in 2023, was named best film at the Czech Lion awards and was sent as Czechia’s Oscar entry.
