What But I'm a Cheerleader Is About
Jamie Babbit's 2000 film follows a high school cheerleader sent to a camp by her parents. The camp promises to make her heterosexual. There she meets another girl. The film turns conversion camp into parody; the narrative pushes its pink and blue colour scheme deliberately far. Natasha Lyonne and Clea DuVall lead. RuPaul is in the cast. It was harshly reviewed on release and later became a cult film. Who it's for: those who like satirical comedy and queer cinema. Who it's not for: viewers expecting a realistic account of such camps; the film works entirely through exaggeration.
