A newspaper editor is murdered just as he is about to expose a rich man’s links to the underworld. A police inspector is assigned to investigate the killing. As the investigation goes on, the matter stops being about finding the murderer and becomes about understanding who is protecting whom. The film works with the moulds of the urban crime story in Indian cinema of the fifties: night scenes, songs and pursuit. The account makes the relation between the freedom of the press and money the story’s point of departure. The songs are set inside the account and came in time to be known apart from the film. At one point the inspector himself falls under suspicion. Dev Anand and Waheeda Rehman appear in Raj Khosla’s hundred and forty six minute Indian film, completed in 1956.
