A poet and a painter fall for each other and for heroin at the same time. The film divides the relationship into three parts: heaven, earth, hell. The chapter titles announce where this is going, which frees the narrative from surprise and puts it on the detail of the decline. Addiction here is not an event but the closest thing two people can do to one another. Abbie Cornish and Heath Ledger lead, with Geoffrey Rush in support. It is adapted from Luke Davies's novel and was shot in Australia. A real warning: the film shows drug use, withdrawal and the slide into sex work directly. For viewers with their own experience of addiction it can be a hard watch.
