What Love in the Time of Cholera Is About
In a Caribbean port a young man waits more than fifty years for the woman he could not marry. In that time he has countless affairs and never stops saying he is waiting. The film cannot quite carry the novel's irony and tends to present the waiting as fidelity, when the book's real subject was that claim itself. Javier Bardem's performance and the use of place are strong against that. Mike Newell directed, adapting Gabriel Garcia Marquez's novel and shooting in English rather than Spanish, a choice that drew heavy criticism. Before watching: if you have read the novel, the adaptation is considerably softened. It also includes a passage involving a relationship with a child.
