Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time

Mike Newell sets the dagger’s rule early and then withholds it: once the sand runs out time cannot be pulled back, so the mechanic appears in a handful of scenes instead of shaping the film. The action grammar is not swordplay; the assault on Alamut and the rooftop chases run on climbing and jumping. Alfred Molina’s ostrich racing sheikh is the comic branch; the main line is a family betrayal signalled early. The parkour came from the source. Jerry Bruckheimer says they hired David Belle, who founded it; Belle choreographed the running, trained Jake Gyllenhaal, and the sequences used no wires. For the rewinds, Tom Wood ruled out running the film backwards, and Double Negative built an event capture rig of nine synchronised cameras at forty eight frames per second. There are close to twelve hundred effects shots. Jordan Mechner, who created the game, wrote the first screenplay and left out the Warrior Within and The Two Thrones material. Eight weeks were shot in Morocco. The lead casting drew heavy criticism, with Racebending and MANAA urging a boycott. A good fit if you want the dagger kept scarce and action leaning on walls and rooftops rather than blades. Not a fit if you expect the Warrior Within and The Two Thrones threads carried over; Mechner left them out on purpose.
