Warcraft

Duncan Jones objected to the screenplay he inherited and refused the trope of good humans and evil monsters. His own measure was fifty fifty, with heroes on both sides, and the construction follows straight from it. Two complete casts advance in parallel, so nobody gets an ordinary share of screen time: king, guardian, apprentice and orc chieftain each carry a partial arc. His first cut ran about two hours and forty minutes; roughly forty came out. Among the losses was the passage explaining why Garona is half orc and half human, so the loyalty question the third act rests on belongs to the character whose background was cut. Orc performers worked on set beside the human actors, faces recorded by a two camera helmet rig, and Jones refused to assemble a performance out of separate takes. The size gap wrecked the body data in the close scenes between Durotan and Draka, so moments such as hand holding were animated by hand. Two figures describe the film’s double life: 47 million dollars in North America against 225 million in China. A good fit if Durotan’s wholly digital face, carrying one performance never assembled from pieces, is what you came for. Less so if you want the film to explain where Garona belongs, since that explanation stayed in the forty missing minutes.
