Duncan Jones's 2009 film follows Sam, working a three-year shift alone at a mine on the Moon. With little time left he has an accident. Back at the base he meets someone he did not expect. The film makes solitude and identity its real subject; the narrative opens its information slowly and makes clear at the end what the company has done. It is the director's first film. Sam Rockwell carries almost the whole picture alone. The effects rely on models and the budget was low. Who it's for: those who like quiet, idea-driven science fiction. Who it's not for: viewers expecting action; the film takes place almost entirely in one location.
