What Caramelo Is About

A film set in Brazil. Pedro is a chef. He is about to open a restaurant and has made all the preparations. Young, ambitious, and his plan is set. One day he goes to a doctor. The diagnosis is bad. A tumour, and it will affect his speech, his taste and his swallowing. The treatment is long. For a chef that means the end of the trade. From there the film becomes a story of stopping. Pedro drops everything. The restaurant, the plan and his friends. He finds a dog in the street. The animal is caramel-coloured. Brazil has a separate name for street dogs of that colour and they are almost a symbol. The dog will not leave him. Pedro does not want him. Then he does. From there the film follows the two of them. The treatment begins. Hospital, drugs, side effects and weight loss. The dog is everywhere. There is a family line too. Pedro does not speak to his mother and the reason goes back years. The dog takes him back there. What the narrative is interested in is not illness but smell: its idea is that the man's trade is built on taste and smell, and that it is exactly that he is losing. The dog's senses are a device. The narrative moves into his view now and then. The cooking is inside the narrative. A kitchen, ingredients, a recipe and a menu. The ending is emotional and the narrative does not hide it. The animal playing the dog is called Amendoim and was taken off the street. Nearly sixty dogs were used in the film; most came from shelters and were adopted by people on the crew after filming. The film went onto a streaming platform in October 2025 and was widely watched around the world. Diego Freitas directed. Rafael Vitti, Kelzy Ecard and Amendoim are in the cast. Who it is for: anyone who likes animal films and emotional family narratives. Who it is not for: anyone looking for distance; the narrative holds nothing back at its emotional points and the last section aims straight at tears.
