The documentary runs Caravaggio's life and his paintings through each other. He arrives in Rome at twenty: broke, quarrelsome, a painter who took his models off the street. He paints saints as labourers and the Virgin with the face of a drowned woman, and the church turns some of the work down. In 1606 he kills a man in a fight and is hunted under a death sentence. Naples, Malta, Sicily. He dies on the road, on his way back to Rome to seek a pardon, and where he is buried is unknown. Jesus Garces Lambert directs; ninety minutes. The paintings are shot in high resolution and taken apart in detail. Art historians speak, among them Mina Gregori and Claudio Strinati. The connection the film makes is this: the violence in the man's life and the light in his paintings come from the same place.
