Three families share a large house in Stanislaviv: Ukrainian, Polish and Jewish. The children grow up together and there is music in the evenings. Then the war comes. First the Soviet occupation and the deportation of the Polish family, then the German occupation and the destruction of the Jewish family. The Ukrainian family decides to hide their neighbours' children. Olesya Morhunets-Isayenko's Ukrainian production takes its title from a Christmas song known all over the world; that melody is in fact a Ukrainian folk tune arranged by Mykola Leontovych. The film tells the war not from the front but from inside a single house. Screenings after 2022 gave it a different resonance. Yana Koroliova takes the lead.
