What Carol's Journey Is About

Spring 1938, Spain in the middle of the civil war. Carol, twelve years old and born in New York, arrives with her mother in the town her mother came from, and fits nowhere in a quiet house full of unspoken rules. Everyone there knows which side everyone else is on and nobody says it out loud; Carol does not know, so she breaks the rules one by one. Imanol Uribe adapted Ángel García Roldán's novel and keeps the war off screen, showing it only where it reaches a child's shoulder. Clara Lago and Juan José Ballesta play it without any sweetening, and the film fits growing up and a country splitting apart into the same short season.
