The film tells the life of the Ukrainian poet and human rights defender Vasyl Stus and his struggle with the Soviet system against the background of the dissident movement from the late 1960s into the early 1980s. The events take place during a last attempt by the KGB to win the poet over with a promise of a kind of freedom, and his death stands as both a tragedy and a matter never cleared up. Roman Brovko’s hundred minute Ukrainian production was written by Serhiy Dzyuba and Artemiy Kirsanov. It became a subject of argument before it even reached cinemas: the release was postponed, the distributor changed, and it finally opened in September 2019. Dmytro Yaroshenko plays the lead.
