Chabuca

Jorge Carmona's 2024 Peruvian film tells the life of the comedian Ernesto Pimentel. He lost his mother young and grew up in poverty. The film is about how the stage persona came about. La Chola Chabuca, a figure from the Andes, became known across the country on television; the narrative places the exclusion Pimentel met alongside that success. Three actors share the role at different ages. The tone is emotional and colourful. The film drew a wide audience in Peru. Who it's for: viewers of Latin American biography and television history. Who it's not for: viewers expecting a detached portrait; the film argues for its subject.
