What Benediction Is About

Siegfried Sassoon was decorated for bravery on the Western Front, then published an open declaration against the continuation of the war and was sent to a hospital rather than court-martialled, where he met Wilfred Owen. The film is far more about what came after: the years in London's literary and theatrical circles, one affair after another, an unease that never lifts, and a search for faith in old age. Terence Davies weaves the poetry through archive footage. One of the director's last films. Jack Lowden plays the young Sassoon and Peter Capaldi the old one.
