What Variações: Guardian Angel Is About
João Maia's 2019 Portuguese film tells the life of António Variações, who changed the country's pop music in the eighties. Born in a northern village, working as a barber after moving to Lisbon and coming to music late, Variações fused traditional Portuguese song forms with pop and new wave sounds, while his appearance and his way of singing openly defied the habits of the period. The film handles both sides of his short career together: the musical daring and the homosexuality he could not live openly. He died in 1984 of an AIDS-related illness, among the first well-known people in Portugal to do so, and the press of the time treated it with shame. Sérgio Praia's performance works without slipping into impersonation. Who it's for: viewers interested in music biography and Portuguese popular culture. Who it's not for: anyone who does not know the singer's music and wants only a dramatic story.
