What Tom of Finland Is About

Touko Laaksonen comes home from the Second World War a decorated officer, but peacetime brings him no relief: homosexuality is a crime in Finland in those years and men are pressed into marriage and children. Touko makes room for himself in his drawings, of muscular men in uniform carrying no shame. When the drawings spread in Los Angeles, the signature Tom of Finland becomes an emblem for a generation. Karukoski's film is both an artist's portrait and a story about living hidden. The AIDS years arrive towards the end and the tone hardens.
