What The Home of Dark Butterflies Is About
Juhani is fourteen and has been moved between foster families for six years. In the end he is sent to an island, to a home set up for troubled boys. The home is run by a man named Olavi, whose own family lives there too. The system runs on punishment, work and silence. Juhani has to learn how to stay there. Dome Karukoski directed the film from Leena Lander's novel. Lander grew up in a boys' home her father ran and wrote the book out of that. The film won several Jussi awards in 2009, including for direction. The telling builds the continuity of fear rather than showing violence. Tommi Korpela plays the superintendent and Niilo Syväoja plays Juhani.
