Davies's second return to his own childhood; it comes from the same world as Distant Voices, Still Lives, but the anger is gone and what remains is longing. In Liverpool in the fifties, Bud is eleven: alone at school, silent at home, and his one refuge is the local cinema. The world on the screen gives him the strength to get through a day. At the same time he is noticing something about his own sexuality that he can tell nobody. There is no plot, only pieces of memory: songs, carpet patterns, light sliding across a wall.
