What Chances Are Is About
A young man who begins remembering a previous life walks into the life of a widow. The premise is strange and the film knows exactly how uncomfortable it could become, so much of the comedy comes from characters trying to paper over that strangeness. The scenes between Cybill Shepherd and Robert Downey Jr are both the best and the most unnerving in it. It stays faithful to the late eighties supernatural romantic comedy, which means the emotional resolution arrives a little too neatly. The script does apply its own rules consistently, which is rarer in the genre than it should be.
