Paulo Rocha shot the film in the remote fishing village of Furadouro and cast local people as themselves alongside professional actors. It shows how hard it is to keep a love alive in a village of struggling fishermen, and counts among the central works of Portuguese new cinema. Carlos Paredes wrote the music.
