What Charlie Chan at the Wax Museum Is About
A wax museum displays figures of criminals like Jack the Ripper and Bluebeard, and the doctor who runs it does more than model wax: he performs plastic surgery. A fugitive takes refuge in exactly this place, and Charlie Chan's path crosses the museum. Lynn Shores's 1940 film runs sixty three minutes almost entirely in one location, and the dark corridors lend the series a borrowed horror atmosphere. Sidney Toler plays Chan, so an Asian character is once again handed to a white actor, and that basic problem of the series is fully present here.
