What Charlie Chan's Secret Is About
Allen Colby, heir to a great fortune, is presumed drowned when a liner sinks off Honolulu. But the man turns up again at the family mansion and is murdered soon afterwards. His body is found during a seance. Everyone in that room is a suspect, and Chan has to find the killer before there is a second death. Gordon Wiles's film is one link in the long-running Charlie Chan series. In the lead is the Swedish-born Warner Oland: a white actor playing the Chinese detective in makeup. That practice is named plainly today for what it was, a racist convention of the cinema. The film itself is a country-house mystery, with a seance and plenty of hidden passages.
