What The Gangster Is About
Gordon Wiles’s 1947 film adapts Daniel Fuchs’s novel Low Company and is usually described as one of the strangest of the 1940s noirs. Barry Sullivan plays a small-time extortionist whose plans start to come apart and who then comes apart himself, so that the film watches him inside his own paranoia rather than inside the crime. The nightclub singer he is involved with, played by Belita, feeds that paranoia rather than easing it. It proceeds through talk more than violence and converts a very small budget into a manner. Akim Tamiroff, Harry Morgan and John Ireland are also in the cast. Belita had come from figure skating, one of the unusual stars the studios were trying out in the forties.
