What The Petrified Forest Is About

Gabby waits tables at a diner in the middle of the Arizona desert and dreams of a life somewhere else. One day Alan, a penniless intellectual, drifts in and the two of them find each other interesting. Not long after, the fugitive killer Duke Mantee and his gang take everyone in the place hostage, and they all sit out the night together with miles of desert in every direction. Adapted from Robert E. Sherwood’s play, it reached the screen with Humphrey Bogart in the role he had played on stage because Leslie Howard insisted on it, and Duke Mantee made Bogart’s career.
