What The Doorway to Hell Is About
One of the gangster pictures Warner made before the Production Code came in. The man who built the city's criminal order decides one day to walk away: he hands the business to his second, marries his girlfriend, and retires to Florida. Everyone around him is stunned, because nobody leaves this way. What he does not know is that his wife and the man he handed everything to are already together. The film neither romanticises the crime nor lectures about it; it just works out coldly that there is no way out. Lew Ayres has the lead, and James Cagney appears here before he was a star. Archie Mayo directs it fast and without ornament.
