Two friends growing up in a poor Chicago neighbourhood move from petty crime to organised work during prohibition. As one of them rises he falls out with everyone at home. The film tells the story not to punish crime but to show how it becomes attractive, which put it at the centre of the censorship arguments of its day. James Cagney's performance shaped everything the genre did afterwards. William A. Wellman directed, with Jean Harlow in support. It was made before the censorship rules tightened.
