Angel on My Shoulder

The gangster Eddie Kagle is shot by his own man and goes to hell. The Devil sees an opportunity in him: up on earth there is an honest judge named Frederick Parker who keeps getting in the Devil's way. He puts Eddie into the judge's body and promises him revenge in exchange. The plan is simple: Eddie will wreck the judge's reputation. But the further the gangster walks around inside that life, the more the trust people place in him, and the judge's fiancée, start to change things. Archie Mayo directs, with Paul Muni playing both Eddie and the judge, Claude Rains as the Devil and Anne Baxter as the woman. A hundred minutes. It comes from that much-loved 1940s vein of fantasy comedy: it delivers a moral and never loses its good humour.
