What The Bishop's Wife Is About

A bishop consumed by his plan for a new cathedral prays for help, and the angel who turns up does the opposite of what was asked, taking an interest in the marriage he has been neglecting rather than the building. The intelligence of the film is in that swerve: the angel is a reminder rather than a dispenser of miracles. Cary Grant plays him at an odd distance, charming and not entirely trustworthy, and that uncertainty rescues the film from being merely a seasonal comfort. The snow and skating sequences are among the most graceful of their period.
