What Alice Is About

A wealthy woman in Manhattan gains unexpected abilities from herbs prescribed by a Chinese doctor she visits for back pain: turning invisible, talking to the ghost of a former lover, hearing what people think. The film uses the fantastical not for comedy but for diagnosis; each herb shows her something in her life she has not seen. The narrative is really about noticing when a marriage ended. Woody Allen wrote and directed, with Mia Farrow in the lead and Alec Baldwin, William Hurt and Joe Mantegna in the cast. Who it's for: those who like light New York comedy with fantastical elements. Who it's not for: viewers wanting realistic drama; the film changes its rules freely.
