Key Largo

A man back from the war arrives at a Florida hotel to visit the father and widow of a friend who died. A group of men waiting at the hotel cannot leave because of a hurricane. The film spends almost all of itself in that hotel and uses the storm outside as the measure of the pressure inside. The narrative saves the shooting for the end; its real subject is a man deciding when to stand up, and postponing it. John Huston directed. It is the last film Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall made together, and Claire Trevor won the supporting actress Academy Award. Who it's for: those who like enclosed thrillers and classic noir. Who it's not for: viewers expecting action; the weight here is on threat and talk.
