During the Second World War an American marine named Allison washes up on a Pacific island. There is one other person there: Sister Angela, who has not yet taken her final vows. Hiding from Japanese patrols, they have to live together for months in a cave. Something happens between them and neither of them names it. John Huston directed and wrote it with John Lee Mahin, from Charles Shaw's novel. Robert Mitchum plays Allison and Deborah Kerr plays Sister Angela. The entire weight is on two performers: there are no other names in the credits and the film takes place almost entirely between them. It was shot on location in Trinidad and Tobago. It received two Academy Award nominations, Best Actress for Deborah Kerr and Best Screenplay. Who it is for: viewers who like two-hander drama and the restrained romance of the fifties.
