What Chasing Ice Is About
The photographer James Balog builds a simple idea to move glacial melt out of the realm of argument: place fixed cameras in the polar regions, have them shoot for years, then assemble the frames into motion. Jeff Orlowski's documentary follows both the technical fight of that project and Balog's physical deterioration, as cameras freeze, timers fail and his knees give out. At its centre is the calving event recorded in Greenland, seventy-five minutes in which a mass the size of Manhattan drops into the sea. It is a documentary that chooses to produce evidence instead of debate. Who it is for: viewers who want the climate crisis argued through visual proof. Who it is not for: anyone expecting political and economic solutions, since the film stays on the measurement side.
