Chasing Two Hares

Svyryd Petrovych Holokhvostyi has a barbershop in Kyiv and a reputation as a dandy. One night he loses everything he owns at cards. The solution that occurs to him is simple: marry a rich girl. Pronia Sirko, a merchant's daughter, falls for his fine manners. But what he actually wants is Halia, who is poor and beautiful. He tries to run both at once and, of course, loses both. Viktor Ivanov directed it from Mykhailo Starytsky's play, with Oleh Borysov as Holokhvostyi and Marharyta Krynytsyna as Pronia. It is among the best known comedies in Ukrainian cinema, and its title comes from the proverb: chase two hares and you will catch neither.
