What Cheburashka Is About
A prologue introduces the small creature who resembles no known animal, tipped out of an orange crate, and shows how Cheburashka meets Gena the crocodile and makes a friend. Three separate stories follow: one in which the pair teach a girl named Masha to walk a tightrope so she can perform in the circus, one in which Gena falls ill and Cheburashka goes to stand in for him as the zoo’s crocodile with predictably confusing results, and one in which they help a magician who has lost his granddaughter while Shapoklyak opens a paid advice bureau that gives useless advice. Makoto Nakamura’s eighty minute film remakes the beloved characters of Soviet puppet animation as a Japanese, Russian and South Korean co-production, and it opened on 18 December 2010.
