What Chevalier Is About
Joseph Bologne really lived: born in Guadeloupe to an enslaved African mother and a French plantation owner, he became known in Paris as a fencer and violinist, led an orchestra and wrote music. The film follows his rise at court, his relationship with the circle around Marie Antoinette, and his eventual break with it. However undeniable his talent, it shows what his identity kept closed to him. It takes liberties with historical detail and keeps to the costume-drama template, but putting a forgotten composer's name back in circulation is worth something.
