The documentary is about the trial brought after the anti war demonstrations at the 1968 Democratic National Convention. The defendants were charged with conspiracy and with crossing state lines to incite a riot; the conflict in the courtroom between the judge and the defendants came to be discussed more than the case itself, and Bobby Seale, the Black Panther leader, was kept in the hearing bound to his chair with his mouth covered, after which his case was severed and he was given four years for contempt. The film’s title comes from the eight defendants plus their two lawyers. Brett Morgen’s hundred and ten minute American film combines archive footage with animation; the trial transcripts are voiced by performers including Hank Azaria, Mark Ruffalo, Nick Nolte and Liev Schreiber. It was shown at Sundance on 18 January 2007.
