Peter Thomas R Richard Kotuk J John Brooks B Billy Calhoun M Mary Calhoun G Gerald Davidson What Children of Darkness Is About
The documentary is about American children and young people placed in mental health institutions. The camera goes inside several state institutions and one private centre, showing the methods used there and what happens in the hands of untrained and inattentive staff. What the film says is plain: the harm done to these children is usually not undone, and institutional care, offered as the solution, is itself the problem. The account shows the children as they are rather than through the names of diagnoses, and that choice still stands out. The fifty seven minute documentary by Ara Chekmayan and Richard Kotuk was made for American television, was nominated for an Academy Award for best documentary, and was completed in 1983.
