What Chittagong Is About
In 1930 in Chittagong, the schoolteacher Surya Sen, whom his pupils called Masterda, put together a group that raided the British armoury, meaning to show that the armed power of the empire could be challenged. The film tells that episode through Jhunku, a fourteen-year-old in the group, and puts the boy’s search for where he belongs at its centre. Manoj Bajpayee plays Surya Sen, with Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Rajkummar Rao and Jaideep Ahlawat in the cast. The director, Bedabrata Pain, is a physicist who spent fifteen years at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and he shot the film with digital imaging technology he had a hand in developing. The record places the events in Bangladesh; in 1930 that was British India, and Bangladesh was founded in 1971.
