What Chrystal Is About
Joe comes back to his Arkansas town after sixteen years in prison. What waits for him is not only a criminal record: a car wreck years earlier killed their son and left his wife Chrystal permanently damaged, in her body and in her mind. He wants to be forgiven. She does not know what to do with him standing in the room again. Ray McKinnon wrote and directed it, using the beauty of the Ozarks as ground for something closer to southern gothic, and he treats the damage as a condition to be lived with rather than a knot to be untied. Lisa Blount, who plays Chrystal, produced it with him; the two had won an Academy Award for a short film a few years earlier. It premiered at Sundance in 2004.
