Coffee With Cinnamon

This 2018 Brazilian film, co-directed by Ary Rosa and Glenda Nicácio, is set in Bahia and focuses entirely on the stories of Black women. Five friends gather at Violeta's house to drink beer and talk; as the conversation goes on, stories of love, loss and pain emerge and what these women did for each other in their hardest times becomes visible. The film centres the solidarity built by friends who come to draw a grieving woman out of her house. It was shot in Cachoeira in Bahia with local performers on a very small budget and became one of the most cited works of the Black cinema emerging from northeastern Brazil. Valdineia Soriano's performance carries it. Who it's for: viewers who like Brazilian independent cinema, stories of Black women and single-location drama. Who it's not for: anyone wanting plot and a dramatic peak, or avoiding the themes of losing a child and of mourning.
